Dissertation Completion Fellowship

With the dissertation completion fellowships the University of Vienna supports early stage researchers of all disciplines in the last phase of their PhD. It is the aim of the fellowships that the funded PhD-projects should be finalised and submitted within the funding period of up to six months.

PhD candidates in Law can apply for a Dissertation Completion Fellowship within a seperate call.

All documents have to be submitted online through the funding portal of the Service Unit Research Services and Career Development.

Requirements
  • The completion and submission of the PhD-thesis should be expected within the duration of the fellowship of up to 6 months. At the time of the application, approximately two thirds of the PhD-thesis should be finalised.
  • Exceptional study record
  • Very good academic record (publications, conference presentations etc.)
  • Positive statement from the supervisor of the PhD-project
  • The net income of the applicant should not be higher than 679€ per month during the time of the fellowship.
  • No parallel funding from other institutions and/or the University of Vienna for the time of the fellowship
  • Compliance with the regulations for PhD candidates (for PhD candidates in the “Doktorat Neu” curriculum: doctoral thesis agreement and all annual reports).
  • The payment of the full fellowship depends on a successful evaluation of the work progress after half of the respective funding period.
Amount and Duration of the Fellowship

Amount: EUR 1.000,-- per month

Duration: up to 6 months

Start: 1 August 2017 until 1 November 2017

A complete application consists of:

1.) Completed online application form.

2.) Following documents as pdf attachments to the online application form:

  • Research proposal of the PhD project with detailed information on the current stage of work and a timeline for the completion of the PhD (altogether max. 10 pages). It has to be convincingly conveyed that the PhD-project can be completed within the duration of the fellowship. It is expected that the final version of the PhD will be submitted at the end of the fellowship.
  • CV including list of publications (max. 3 pages)
  • Last draft version of the PhD-thesis
  • Transcript of records (“Sammelzeugnis”)
  • For PhD candidates in the “Doktorat Neu” curriculum only: doctoral thesis agreement (“Dissertationsvereinbarung”) and all annual reports (“Fortschrittsberichte”)
  • Statement of your PhD-supervisor. Following the completion of the online application form your supervisor will be automatically asked to fill out and submit an online form. The statement has to be submitted until 19 October 2016, 15:00. Without this statement from your supervisor your application is not complete.

    All documents have to be in 11pt, 1,5 line spacing. Applications can be submitted either in German or in English.

Please note: Only complete applications will be considered for funding.

Selection procedure

Formal criteria: The Service Unit Research Services and Career Development will check all applications for completeness and if all formal criteria have been fulfilled. 

Selection procedure: A panel of experts, appointed by the Rectorate of the University of Vienna, will review all applications and select the projects which are to be funded. Main criteria for the selection are: 

  • Current state of the PhD-project and timeline for completion: Has the applicant convincingly made clear that her/his PhD-project can be completed within six months?

  • Statement from supervisor: Does the supervisor fully support the application?

The dissertation completion fellowship will be awarded competitively on the basis of the submitted documents and within the financial limits of the funding scheme. For applications of similar quality additional selection criteria like academic (publications, conference presentations) and study record (length of studies, etc.) will be applied.

All applicants agree that that anonymised information on the funding schemes of the University of Vienna will be published and forwarded to the Austrian Federal Ministry for Science and Research.

The applicants enjoy no legal right for funding.

The applicants will be informed in December about the outcome of the selection procedure.
