UniVie Connect: Mission Climate – Building Networks & Partnerships for a Resilient Future

30.06.2025

A report by Luise Scheiber

On June 26th, 2025, the DOCK – Laboratory for Future Questions at Vienna’s Danube Canal became a vibrant hub for experts, visionaries, and decision-makers. Almost 50 Researchers from the University of Vienna, representatives from funding institutions, ministries, Vienna’s municipal departments, NGOs, and businesses gathered with a shared goal: to strengthen Austria’s resilience to the impacts of climate change.

The event, “UniVie Connect: Mission Climate,” was organized by the UniVie Innovation Team in collaboration with the Mission Management Unit of the Austrian Research Promotion Agency FFG. It provided a platform for exchanging ideas, fostering new partnerships, and developing innovative approaches in the fields of climate change adaptation and Nature Based Solutions (NBS).

Inspiring Keynotes and Valuable Insights

The afternoon began with welcoming remarks from Sandra Herrmann (FFG; Mission Climate Manager) and Tobias Reckling (University of Vienna; Head of Knowledge Exchange, Technology Transfer & National Funding). Sandra Herrmann then provided an overview of the EU Mission on Climate Adaptation and its implementation in Austria.

A highlight of the event was the keynote presentation, “Nature Based Solutions: Key Elements in Rural Landscapes and Cities,” delivered by Kerstin Krellenberg and Stephan Glatzel. Krellenberg showcased the diverse benefits of Nature Based Solutions; from promoting biodiversity to enhancing quality of life. She emphasized that these approaches can only succeed when they are developed locally, through transdisciplinary and participatory processes, and closely integrated with technological advancements and social innovation.

Stephan Glatzel complemented this perspective with practical examples from rural areas, particularly wetlands. He shared best practices and underscored the importance of “scaling up, out, and deep” to maximize the long-term impact of these solutions.

Another key part of the program was the presentation of funding opportunities for research and implementation of Nature Based Solutions. Sandra Herrmann, Theresa Heitzlhofer (FFG), and Eva Margelik (Environment Agency Austria) provided insights into current programs and demonstrated how innovative projects can be supported.

Networking in Focus

The event concluded with its most anticipated segment: 1:1 networking. In four moderated rounds, participants had the chance to exchange expertise, establish new connections, and discuss potential collaborations.

The University of Vienna and the FFG extend their heartfelt thanks to all participants for their valuable contributions and active engagement.

EU Mission Climate

The EU Mission on Climate Adaptation is part of the Horizon Europe program and aims to make Europe climate-resilient by 2030. The mission focuses on supporting at least 150 regions and communities in developing and implementing adaptation strategies. It emphasizes innovative, scientifically grounded, and practical approaches that are realized through collaboration between science, policy, business, and society.

Nature Based Solutions (NBS)

Nature Based Solutions (NBS) are innovative approaches that leverage natural processes and ecosystems to address societal challenges such as climate change. Examples include river restoration, wetland rehabilitation, and urban greening. NBS not only provide ecological benefits but also promote biodiversity, improve quality of life, and create economic opportunities.
