Retreat: PhD Supervision - Next Level
Are you a busy PhD supervisor looking for strategies to make your supervision even more efficient and rewarding? Would you like to gain inspiration from other experienced supervisors?
This two-day retreat on PhD supervision offers the opportunity for scholarly reflection and the exchange of best practices among experienced supervisors at the University of Vienna. It also invites participants to reflect on their role as culture bearers and research leaders within the academic community.
The retreat programme is highly interactive and tailored specifically to your needs. Together, we will explore how to
- balance the many dilemmas of doctoral supervision
- address concrete challenges through collegial dialogue and rely on your own judgement in complex cases
- foster PhD candidates’ independence and sense of ownership prevent,
- address, and mediate potential conflicts—both individually and within groups
- engage the research environment as a resource, and navigate differing interests and expectations in a group
- support PhD candidates’ well-being while modelling a sustainable work-life balance in academia
- formulate a strategy for the continued development of your supervisory practice

Location and Accommodation
The retreat will take place at Seminarhotel Tulbingerkogel in Mauerbach, located approximately 30 minutes by car from Vienna, in the Wienerwald. Group transport from Vienna to Mauerbach and back will be provided. To help us coordinate the transport service, please indicate in your registration whether you would like to use the group transport or prefer to travel independently.
For the night of 19–20 May, a single room is booked for each participant at Seminarhotel Tulbingerkogel.
